THEATER CAMPS FOR STUDENTS HEADING INTO 3RD-8TH GRADE!

Mu Explorations is back this July with week-long offerings for intrepid theater lovers! Elementary and middle schoolers can choose the morning camp, afternoon camp, or both for a full-day option. Each day, we’ll be exploring aspects of theater with professional artists, celebrating Asian American history, and—of course—having plenty of fun along the way.

Learn more about this summer’s offerings by jumping to our Elementary School Camps and Middle School Camps, descriptions. Upon registering, please email programs manager Morgen Chang at morgen@theatermu.org.

LOCATION: The Hive Collaborative in Saint Paul’s Hamline-Midway neighborhood, 677 Hamline Ave. N, Saint Paul, MN 55104.

NOTE: If campers enroll in both modules, please note that a Theater Mu staff will be on site during the program break from noon to 1 pm. So sign up, pack a lunch, and experience a full day of theater!

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CAMPS (JULY 8-12, 2024)

Elementary school camps are for students entering third through fifth grade. Each week-long module is $215, with an option to Pay As You Are. No matter which classes you attend, you will discover how to use your voice and body, explore stories, create characters, and design surprising new worlds. Come explore the many elements of theater on and off the stage, then perform a showcase of your talents at the end of the camp!

Morning Module:
Myths, Monsters, & Gods: Asian American Folktales
9 am-noon

In this morning module, campers will go on impossible journeys and explore magical lands inspired by Asian American folktales and children's stories, all while improving their acting and world-building skills. Campers will learn where these legends came from, why these themes still matter, and how to bring these stories to life through theater games and exercises, culminating in a mini showcase.

Afternoon Module:
Playwriting 101
1-4 pm

Discover how to create a world with your words. Campers will learn the secrets of playwriting as they build scenes, plot, and dialogue, and they'll blend their imagination with their own experiences to create rich stories. By the end of the week, campers will write a play together to present in a mini showcase for friends and family. Get ready to bring your audience to laughter, tears, and applause!

MIDDLE SCHOOL CAMPS (JULY 15-19, 2024)

Middle school camps are for students entering sixth through eighth grade. Each week-long module is $215, with an option to Pay As You Are.

Morning Module:
Theater Games for Actors
9 am-noon

Improve your acting skills across a week of theater games, technique lessons, and group activities as you build up your actor's toolkit. Every day, we'll work on pushing our creativity to fully express ourselves through our voices, bodies, senses, and imagination as solo performers and ensemble members. The finale of the week is a mini showcase where your friends and families can come see scenes and monologues performed by you!

Afternoon Module:
Musical Theater
1-4 pm

Get ready to take center stage with Mu's Musical Theater Camp. Through exercises and games, you'll not only improve your singing and dancing, but you'll also learn how to truly tell a story through your performance. When we're not practicing, we'll spend some time diving into Asian American representation in musical theater history—Lea Salonga or Philippa Soo, anyone? To cap it off, we'll end the week with a group performance for friends and family to enjoy!

Mu was born out of a need for AAPI representation in American theater, and we represent the Asian American diaspora, honoring our identity as Asian Americans while also respecting our diverse backgrounds and experiences. Our past participants have specifically pointed out the joy of sharing theater with other AAPI budding artists, and for this reason, we will prioritize students who identify as Asian or Asian American for enrollment.

If financial support is needed, please let us know.
