HOME / PRODUCTION HISTORY / Paper Angels
Stories written on the walls
Taking place in 1915 on Angel Island—the Ellis Island of the West—this play is based on real poems that hopeful Chinese immigrants inscribed on the building's walls. From 1910 to 1940, more than 500,000 people were brought to Angel Island, and the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 helped permit long detentions, from weeks to months to, in one case, almost two years.
